The Quay had a full squad and we had 8. CQ brought quite a few youngsters which is good to see too. We had 7 rather past it players plus Euan who represents all our youth policy! Always good to swap notes with Mr Tilley and we looked forward to an easy-going game.

We won the toss and chose to field. Not sure I would have done that if we had the heat of last week, but there was something about CQ’s batting that felt like there were always wickets around the corner.

Tom and Euan open the bowling.

Tom soon had a wicket – bowled. 5-1.

Next over Euan and new bat softly drove to mid-on when Matt pounced and hit the stumps with the bat 3 metres short of his ground.

As we continued there were great areas from both, Euan especially getting a few to hoop around.

Tails were up and they were 5-2.

A few more overs and Tom gets another – c&b their skipper Andy.

After 10 overs, we move on to Prasad and Venkat.

Soon Tom takes an amazing forward dive one-hander to just scoop the ball from the deck. Top top class.

Venkat bowls next and soon gets a c&b.

CQ get to motor on a bit as Phil Keidle joins. No Jonty to torment today (is it the match reports?)  and a few leggy pulls sees boundaries tick up.

It may just be worth mentioning that Skip had the gloves today and put himself right in the mix for keeper of the year with some terrific takes, given he had a fractured finger.

Matt and Leighton have a couple of overs each at 22/24. Great areas again and Matt gets a wicket. Leighton also good and keeps economy well.

But rotation the name of the game now and Venkat comes back. Eventually Phil tried another cow shot and Ventak bowls him with a leggy turning ball. Manish has a couple of overs, again causing trouble. Manish inexplicably drops the most spooned up c&b opportunity of his life and misses the chance to get his second wicket for MIMCC! Catching practice for him!

In the end Prasad wraps it up.

Tom gets 2, Prasad 4, Venkat 3, Matt 1. Good bowling from all though today.

Rahul gets the deliveroo award of the day – unfortunately gets to the ground just 5 minutes after we wrap it up. But he made it for tea, where our very own Mr Hollywood brought along his latest baking gems. Photo on WA but really good. Rahul was tempted to stay on and umpire, which he did for a while and last seen with pockets full of cake heading home before the end.

Andy & Leighton open.

Dix opens and quick, but likes to slam the deck. Second over, Leighton falls first ball (golden quacker I’m afraid) to a low beamer. 5-1.

Venkat joins next. Tests a few, streaky boundary, but digging in.

In the 6th over, skip gets a few boundaries and then gets carried away trying to hit over cover, but just in reach. 13 and 26-2.

Tom out next, again a few tesers and a few misfires as well. He nearly went straight away to a pull to fine leg, but was dropped.

He punished a loose one eventually, but after a change of bowling after 10, soon feathers the faintest of edges. Appeals, confusion – nah – Tom was walking anyway. 7 runs and 39-3.

Matt in next and Mr Busy was away from the off.

Dean on to bowl and while he was economical for some of his overs, Matt and Venkat dug in, both running well but sensible. Well, sensible, but giving catching chances as I counted 3 drops for Matt and one for Venkat.

But sometimes things just go your way and this pair got to 71 after 20 overs. Soon they got to 89 and the fifty partnership. Back came their opening bowlers but no breakthrough and ticking over. Again no panic as they closed in, with Matt getting more boundaries including 2 in the final over.

103 for 3. 14 points and a super result from where we started the day.

Matt had a really mature and sensible knock for 38 NO and Venkat supported superbly for his 22 NO. Great game for them and a superb team performance.

Thanks to CQ for a great friendly spirit on the day, hope they stay with us for next season and to all who helped with the set up and pack away, as well as ground crew.
