Many thanks to everyone who turned up to support or play last night. We managed to raise £270 for the British Red Cross in memory of Dave Hobbs, a former player for Maeshafn and Northop Irregulars (and Airbus worker) who tragically died way too early in life during lockdown.
Despite the England match being live on TV at the same time (just about as they had actually finished beating Germany by the time we actually started!), we managed to get 21 players out to play in the match, having roped in a few very welcome guests stepping in at the last minute.
The Northop Irregulars team gave the Maeshafn team a good thumping, scorebook images attached! I am sure Dave would have very much appreciated it and if he had played in the game no doubt would have turned up with his trademark Tesco carrier bag ‘full’ of kit, taken a load of wickets as usual – surprising the batsmen with his deceptively fast, swing bowling – and had a quick knock with his usual golf shots at the bottom of the order.
Its been said before numerous times, but there really are very few people in life who never seem to have a bad word spoken about them – and only fond memories of any encounter. Dave Hobbs really was one of these – a lovely, kind, decent bloke, a very special person and he is sorely missed.
NB: the above excludes any opposition batsmen who were dismissed by his bowling, who no doubt had lots of very rude words to say to him given half a chance!
RIP Dave Hobbs – Gone But Not Forgotten.
