Abergele 2nds – 111 all out. MIMCC 114 for 4 off 26 overs.
A short match report this week as the trip to Italy/Ruthin last time took it out of me. Apologies as I cant remember all the catches so please feel free to edit (apart from Mr Fagan who is far too free with his editorial…) – please text us if you took a catch and we’ll add them in.
After Umang joining us last week it pleasing to welcome a few more new faces that he’s helped introduce and we look forward to seeing them again in the future.
We won the toss and decided to field, on a hard track with a quick outfield.
Tom really sharp from the opening ball, with Umang at the other end also keeping it tight. First 3 overs were maidens and 3 runs only by the end of the sixth.
In the seventh Tom bowled an opener with a beautiful cutter, then a streaky four behind and then bowled the No 3. 7-1 became 11-2.
After 10 overs the first change, with Prasad and Venkat coming on. Umang had no joy, but his bowling was quick and accurate – a definite talent for this opening role and deserved more. His figures below very impressive.
Prasad got a wicket first ball, with Fordy running round the back of Siv (back from holiday but definitely nothing rusty about his gloveman-ship) to pouch a looping top edge. Not seen that sort of mobility since Gray was in the slips. 19-3. Then last ball of the same over, another catch for no runs 19-4.
Venkat also pretty tight with his lines, but in now one of two Ruthin loans to Abergele, Jamie Hughes and a useful bat. Jamie started in a disciplined way, drilling anything loose or full toss for a boundary. At 20 overs Prasad and Venkat came off. They were 52-4 .
On came Manish – happy to show his old club what they were missing – and Fordy at the other end. Manish had a tidy start. Fordy got a wicket first ball with their opener caught behind by Siv (did I mention what an excellent game he was having?) 53-6.
Manish next over also took a wicket, bowling their No.7 after a big swing and a miss. 56-7.
Fordy next over gets another wicket when Jamie, caught in two minds by the dead slow pace of Fordy’s mortars, pulled to square leg only for Venkat to reach up and grab one handed. 33 runs for Jamie, but a small portion of schadenfreude baked up by our resident Mr Hollywood!
The Abergele tail though was having a stubborn wag. Venkat and Umang saw more overs through, but no wickets unfortunately. (Umang -8-3-11-0) and Venkat (9-0-23-0). So Tom and Prasad at the death, with Tom soon in the wickets again, finishing (9-2-13-3) and Prasad getting 2 wickets in the 40th over to get them all out for 111. (9-0-40-4). Prasad unusually expensive, but good hunting today.
Batting – Siv – very like Alec Stewart out with Yash a new recruit. From the off the run rate ticked along. Siv hit a boundary first ball, Yash took a while to dig in (as it had been several years since he last played) but slowly got going. Some very nice late square cuts amongst his boundaries. At ten overs we were 55 without loss. Bowling wise on came Berwyn the skipper, whose Fordy like dead slow mortars undid Yash playing and missing. 27 runs though and a great debut.
Venkat went in at 3, but Berwyn was hard to get away with Roy on at the other end. The runs slowed right down and wickets came calling. Siv next impatiently taking a swipe to carry to Jamie Hughes at square. 58-2. Dots galore now in the book and Umang out with Venkat. Venkat like Siv has an impatient heave and gets caught for 5. 65-3. In come Prasad, who soon carts a boundary and livens up his strike rate. Umang unfortuately gets bowled in the 20th over for a patient 1. 69-4.
Some concerns pitchside, but Prasad and Tom warm up and start to take the game away from Abergele. Berwyn is seen off and the replacements just don’t have the same grip of fear. By the 26th over, we have gone from 69 to 114 and win the game. Both Tom and Prasad with regular boundaries and not out 25 and 20 respectively.
So a good win, no drama and 13 points in the bag.
Thanks to everyone for grounds duties and anymore of you who can turn up early to help share the load, you’re very welcome.
